Plot Summary

"Supergirl's Super Boy Friends" (13 pages)

Linda is affected by a red kryptonite statue of SupergirlLinda is tickled to notice that many citizens of Midvale are now sporting a "Supergirl Hair-do" and that products with the Supergirl name on it are being sold, with the royalties donated to charities. Unbeknownst to her, Supergirl fan clubs have formed everywhere, including in the Bottle-City of Kandor. Returning home, Linda sees one of her Legion statuettes glowing, and the next moment Phantom Girl appears due to a time-projector. Because the device is not working properly, she can only stay a few moments, but before she vanishes she gives Supergirl a figurine of her which she carved. Unfortunately, Phantom Girl unknowingly made the statuette of red kryptonite which the Girl of Steel feels affecting her right away. Later, she kisses her mother goodbye when she leaves with Dick Malverne for a trip to the Midvale Museum. Once there, the two get their picture taken in front of a meteor, then kiss in front of a totem pole. Afterwards, Supergirl goes out on patrol and gets a telepathic message from Lori Lemaris. Supergirl rushes to Atlantis in time to stop a sunken battleship from falling on a shrine honoring Atlantis' greatest heroes of the past. Before she leaves, she gives her boy friend Jerro a kiss. After she returns home, her mother discovers she has the powers of super-speed and super-strength while cleaning house. Meanwhile, the brakes in Dick's car give way and his car falls over a cliff, but he survives unscathed. He flies to Linda's house to show her his new super-powers, and Linda realizes the red kryptonite must have given her the power to make others super when she kisses them. Dick, however, thinks the two of them must have gotten powers when they stood in front of the meteor and had their picture taken, with the flash-bulb's light rays combining with the radiation from the meteor uniting to alter their bodies' chemistry. Linda has to pretend to be afraid of her new powers so Dick won't get suspicious, and as they part she warns Dick to take it easy in case their super-powers wear off at a bad time. She makes a short trip to Atlantis where Jerro, too, has super-powers, but she says she doesn't want a steady boy-friend yet. Later, a flying Jerro meets up with Dick, also flying, and they play follow the leader in the sky, then save a South Seas island from a gigantic tidal wave. Supergirl rushes in and warns them to stop performing super-feats in case their powers wear off at a dangerous time, then she flies to Japan to rescue victims of an earthquake. Dick and Jerro don't heed her warning, and are flying over a volcano when their powers suddenly disappear and they start to fall. Suddenly, they are rescued by a horde of small Supergirls, and the Girl of Steel arrives in time to be told that they are the members of her Kandorian fan club who have become a Supergirl Emergency Squad. Later, Linda forgetfully kisses a neighbor boy's puppy, but, after hours of observation, is relieved to see that her kiss had no affect on him, so the red kryptonite effect has now worn off. She coats her Supergirl statuette with a spray of lead paint so it won't be able to affect Superman or Krypto, but keeps it as a momento of one of her most amazing adventures.

Comments

The Supergirl products shown in this story are cosmetics, games, and dolls. Each sold separately. ;)

Superman is mentioned as being on a space mission with his robots during the events of this story.

Statuettes of Legionnaires Phantom Girl, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad appear in this story, as well as shadowed figures of at least four other members. Above this set of figures, Linda has a plaque which reads "Legion of Super-Heroes". When the Phantom Girl figures starts to glow, Linda says it is a pre-arranged signal, presumably letting her know that that particular Legionnaire is coming for a visit.

A sign in front of the meteor at the Midvale Museum of Natural History says that it fell near the town in 1952. The sign in front of the Kpnum Totem Pole at the museum reads "According to an old Indian legend, whoever kisses before this totem pole will be happy forever."

After Dick and Linda kiss in front of the totem pole, it is funny to note that Dick thinks "Golly, I wish I had the nerve to ask her for another kiss!" while Linda is thinking "I was hoping he'd ask me for another kiss!"

Jerro says it is his birthday in this story.

Edna Danvers seems to be quite happy in her role as a housewife in this story. She refuses to let Linda help her with her house-cleaning, sayins she enjoys doing it herself, then is glad her powers wore off as she "prefer[s] relying on [her] husband and [Linda] for protection!"

It is interesting to note that when Dick Malverne loses control of his car, he would have died if had not been kissed by Linda and given super-powers. However, he also would have died later, in the volcano, when he suddenly lost his powers, if not for the intervention of the Supergirl Emergency Squad.

Super-Dick gives Superboy, the king of fabricated explanations, a run for his money with his complicated "theory" on how he and Linda acquired their super-powers.

Supergirl notes that, "though Dick and Jerro each gained super-powers about an hour apart... they lost them only moments apart! I guess that's due to another unpredictable effect of red kryptonite!" What probably happened was that, although she kissed them (and her mother) and different times, giving them powers, they all lost their powers at pretty much the exact same time as the red kryptonite effect wore off of Supergirl.

The title of the story is "Supergirl's Super Boy-Friends" yet Brainiac 5 does not appear in the story even though Supergirl has referred to him as her boyfriend on previous occasions (Action Comics No. 276, 282). Perhaps Brainy was excluded from the story because he already is a "super" boyfriend.

This issue has the same cover date as Superboy No. 98, which featured the first appearance of Ultra Boy. This might be taken as serendipitous "hint" as to the destiny that makes Phantom Girl and Ultra Boy a couple.
